“Since we have come to the refuge my son has become a very happy and confident boy. Before we came here he was very shy and wouldn't leave my side, but now he is quite happy to play with other children.”

March 2020
Domestic Abuse Bill

"In the year ending March 2019, an estimated 2.4 million adults aged 16 to 74 years experienced domestic abuse in the last year (1.6 million women and 786,000 men).

The Bill aims to ensure that victims have the confidence to come forward and report their experiences, safe in the knowledge that the state will do everything it can, both to support them and their children and pursue the abuser.".

Dec 2022
Children classed as domestic abuse victims under new guidance

"Children who grow up amid domestic abuse will be treated as victims and given specialist support even if they were not present during violent attacks.

Changes to Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) guidance mean they will get automatic access to mental health treatment, other support services and protective measures in court.

Prosecutors will be asked to consider the impact of abuse on young people when making a charging decision, and to seek information from schools, councils and charities."

June 2022
New non-fatal strangulation offence comes into force

"In June 2022 non-fatal strangulation was made a specific offence as part of the government’s landmark Domestic Abuse Act. The practice typically involves a perpetrator strangling or intentionally affecting their victim’s ability to breathe in an attempt to control or intimidate them.

The new offence will also apply to British nationals abroad. It means perpetrators can be prosecuted in England and Wales for offences committed overseas – ensuring there is no escape for abusers."
